On the Way

I recently saw this clip from a movie called Searching for Bobby Fischer.

In the clip a man wants to play a game of chess against his son.
The boy is not interested and wants to do something else with dad instead.
The boy finally agrees but quickly throws the match in a way not obvious to the father.
The father walks proudly into the kitchen and makes a comment to the boy's mother about his victory.

The mother says "He wasn't trying to win...he doesn't want to beat his daddy".

Just the other day a man told me his son played the guitar.
The son was really very good but when he turned 18 the man told his son that he needed to go get a job because he wasn't going to make any money playing guitar.
His son believed him.

Another man had a son who played guitar.
The son was very good and the man took him to concerts, pointed out the guitar players and told him, that if he wanted to, that could be his job some day too.
His son believed him.

That son was Jedd Hughes.
He came to America from Australia.
Where he met Ben Atkins at South Plains College and toured with him for a time.
Then he moved to Nashville, TN where he has gone on to work with Patty Loveless, Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Chris Stapleton to name just a few.

Both dads were right.

My take away from this probably goes something like: be careful who you believe and who you let influence you, and maybe even who you let win.
Also, be the kind of parent who notices your child's talents and interests, then expose them to a world of possibilities.
